Super Mario Brothers: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach (1985): Only released in Japan, this is the first Super Mario Brothers animated movie. One night, Mario was playing his Famicom (Japanese NES) when all of the sudden a princess jumps out of the television, searching for help. She finds Mario and asked for help before Koopa King kidnaps her and brings her back to the television. His only clue in rescuing her is a pendant. The next day, Mario and Luigi encounter a dog while working and follow him to a strange world, known as the Mushroom Kingdom. There, they learn from a wise man that the princess, Peach, is being held prisoner by Bowser, the Koopa King and that the Mario Brothers are the only ones who can rescue her and save the Mushroom Kingdom. This is another story of how the Mario Brothers came to the Mushroom Kingdom and meet Princess Peach. For those who are huge fans of the relationship between Mario and Peach, this movie is definitely for you. The movie is bizarre as the Koopa King acts like a nerd, but at least he can fight. Luigi is literally a greedy gold-digger, as he is only in this adventure for money (he even wanted to sell the pendant). The artwork is actually pretty good and more accurate than the American cartoons. Overall, this is one movie that should not be missed by anyone. Right now, at least in Jan 2008, it is available on YouTube, but good luck buying one (even more if you want to translate the whole thing, though I heard one is starting now).
The Wizard (1989): This is the movie that started the Super Mario Brothers 3 craze. Starring Luke Edwards and Fred Savage as two half-brothers, one of them being a video game wizard, who go to California to go play in a video game tournament. However, the wizard, Jimmy has problems of his own, and his friends and family are trying help. It even becomes a race to California before child services and the boys' parents take them back to Utah. During that time, they practice with various Nintendo games such as Ninja Gaiden, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Super Mario Brothers. This is a movie worth seeing for old school gamers. It is also a movie that became the big preview for Super Mario Brothers 3, which was scheduled for release a couple months after the movie's release.
Super Mario Brothers: The Movie (1991): Yeah, Super Mario Brothers had a full-length feature, live-action movie. Starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as our heroes from Brooklyn, Samantha Mathis as the damsel in distress, Daisy, and Dennis Hopper as the evil tyrant, Koopa, this story is about the Marios stumbling on a world of dinosaurs which in reality is the Mushroom Kingdom, and the ruler is none other than Koopa. But Koopa has other things in mind other than dealing with a bunch of plumbers and winning elections; he was after a piece of the rock that connects his world with the real world, and the one who has the piece is the princess of the Mushroom World, which happens to be Daisy herself! This movie depicts the Marios first encounter in the Mushroom Kingdom, and how they became heroes. Of course, this movie is not really meant for real Mario fans, as this movie is not really accurate.
